Meet Emily! She's a firefighter, and she has a very important job to do! Every morning, Emily puts on her uniform, grabs her firefighter helmet, and gets ready for another busy day helping keep her community safe. But before Emily can head off to the fire station, she has a few important things to check! Safety first!
It's October, and that means it's Fire Prevention Week! Emily knows that being a firefighter isn't just about putting out fires. It's also about helping prevent them from starting in the first place.
First Stop: The Charging Station! Emily walks into the living room and notices a phone, two tablets, and a rechargeable toy. "Whoa! That's a lot of charging going on!" Emily says. She takes a closer look. Are all the chargers in good condition? Are they the correct chargers for each device? Are too many things plugged into one extension cord or power strip? And wait a minute..."Who's charging their tablet on the couch under a pillow?"
Not on Emily's watch!
She carefully moves the tablet to a hard, clear surface where it can charge safely. Emily knows that rechargeable batteries can get hot, especially when they aren't charged properly. "Smart charging is a superpower!" Emily says with a smile.
Next Stop: The Smoke Alarms! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Don't worry! It's just Emily testing her smoke alarms. It's October, and Emily is making sure her home is ready for Fire Prevention Week. She knows smoke alarms should be tested every month, not just in October! She checks that every alarm is working properly and reminds her family that smoke alarms help warn us when there's a fire.
"Remember," Emily says, "when you hear the smoke alarm, you need to get out and stay out!"
Time for an Escape Plan!
Before heading to the fire station, Emily gathers her family around the kitchen table. "Pop quiz! If our smoke alarm went off right now, what would we do?" Everyone starts talking at once!
"Run outside!"
"Find the dog!"
"Grab my favorite stuffed animal!"
"Hold on!" Emily laughs. "Let's make sure everybody knows the plan!"
Together, they draw a picture of their home. Emily helps everyone identify two ways out of each room, when possible, and choose a safe meeting place outside. And the most important rule? Once you're outside, NEVER go back inside! Not for toys, not for backpacks, and not even for your favorite stuffed animal. Emily reminds everyone that firefighters are trained to handle dangerous situations, and grown-ups can call 911 once they're safely outside.
One Last Safety Check!
Now it's time for Emily to head to work! At the fire station, she checks her helmet, boots, gloves, and firefighting equipment. Everything needs to be ready in case someone needs help. As Emily climbs into the fire truck, she thinks about all the little things her family practiced that morning.
Checking chargers.
Testing smoke alarms.
Practicing an escape plan.
Knowing how to get outside safely.
She smiles.
